Fethard Equine Hospital has a team of 4 specialist equine surgeons, including a board certified specialist in equine sports medicine. We are a busy referral equine practice in the South of Ireland, with a large varied surgical, elective, emergency and lameness caseload. Our hospital provides services to an extensive breeding, racing and sport horse population. Our state-of-the-art hospital facilities include a newly installed Qalibra CT, Hallmarq MRI and a dedicated laboratory. Fethard Equine Hospital has the capacity to house up to 60 horses which includes specialist Medicine, ICU and Isolation units.

We are now seeking an equine surgeon with an ethos for team work, enabling us to bring together collective skills, to provide the best possible care for our patients. We offer an attractive salary along with fully funded CPD. Equine Internal Medicine Fellowship at Fethard Equine Hospital - 2027 now OPEN

The 2027 medicine fellowship application is now open at Fethard Equine Hospital. We are looking for equine vets with a strong interest in neonatology, critical care, and internal medicine. 

Previous referral hospital experience (internship) or experience with sick foals is essential.
The successful candidate must be enthusiastic with good team working skills and professionalism.
Candidates will be in charge of the admission, care, and treatment of over 150 ICU foals and a wide range of other medical conditions in both adult and neonates equine patients.
Fethard Equine Hospital medicine unit is a well-purposed-built ward with state-of-the-art facilities to handle large number of critically ill patients and ensure the highest standard of care with lots of seasonal supporting staff.
The medicine team is a specifically designated team of yard staff, assistants, technicians, nurses, interns, vets and consultants that provide round the clock care of inpatients in a friendly and supportive workplace.
This is a great opportunity to gain further experience in equine neonatal medicine as this is a hands-on medicine position where the candidate will be expected to work autonomously by the end of this period.
Due to the seasonal nature of the position, this is a 6-month fixed contract, starting in January 2027. Accommodation in town and daily lunch will be provided. Salary will be discussed based on experience.

Veterinary Nurse Positions

Fethard Equine Hospital has a current team of 8 veterinary nurses, 4 surgeons, 1 specialist medicine clinician, 9 veterinary interns, as well as a large support team. We are one of Irelands busiest Equine Hospitals with a modern, purpose-built building with all diagnostics equipment including an in-house CT, standing Hallmarq MRI as well as an on-site laboratory, new purpose built medicine facility, isolation unit and much more.

The Role:

Our nurses have rotating roles within the hospital through surgery, medicine, in-patient, and out-patient care. The position entails a shared OOH rota of 1 in 8 with Monday and Friday the following week off or time in lieu to be taken at a later date. Any overtime worked is paid. New graduates and experienced nurses are welcome to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for a team player interested in working in a busy practice with a great team of 8 nurses.

We see a large number of racehorses, sport horses, ponies, mares, and foals throughout the year for surgical and non-surgical cases so you will enjoy a varied caseload. The hospital is based in the busy town of Fethard, 15 minutes from the M8 Cashel exit of the motorway. Cashel is home to the Rock of Cashel, many great restaurants and pubs, stunning scenery and walks and the newly built 5 star Cashel Palace hotel. We are surrounded by thoroughbred farms and are just down the road from the famous Coolmore stud and Ballydoyle Racing. A more recent addition to Fethard is the newly built Fethard Town park with a Full Size GAA/Rugby Floodlit 3G Pitch, Training Grass Pitch & Walkways, Gym and Cafe on site.

About the course

Practical foaling and dystocia is led by experts in the field offering a combination of hands-on training and in-depth discussions to provide invaluable insights into mare dystocia. From straightforward foalings to intricate salvage operations and fetotomies, you will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to handle a variety of scenarios and know when and how to refer or call it a day.

Bring your waterproofs and prepare to get down on the ground to “foal” using models, correct common malpresentations using cadavers and hone your skills in using fetotomy wire. There are no other courses in Europe offering this experience, you don’t want to miss it.

Veterinary Externships and Internships positions

The internship program at Fethard Equine Hospital is a rotating equine internship consisting of rotations through surgery/lameness and internal medicine. Duties involve performing daily patient assessments and treatments, triage of emergencies, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasound, CT and MRI), participating in lameness evaluations, assisting in surgery, and assisting with outpatient procedures. The program is designed to provide a learning environment in which first year veterinarians can sharpen their diagnostic, clinical and decision making skills while under the mentorship of specialists. It is 13 months in length, and two intern classes are accepted annually starting in July and December, respectively. Accommodation and veterinary defense society liability coverage provided along with a competitive internship salary.

Prerequisites for acceptance:

Completion in good standing of a veterinary degree (MVB or equivalent)
A veterinary license from the Veterinary Council of Ireland
Completion of an externship program of at least 2 weeks duration at Fethard Equine Hospital
Due to difficulties in processing working visas, the internship is only open to citizens of EU member states or UK citizens.

Veterinary Extern Positions - CLOSED FOR 2026

The extern will assist the interns in out-of-hours monitoring, surgery, treatments, and medical cases.
Please note we are a very busy hospital with a lot going on so being comfortable around horses is essential.
Lunch will be supplied daily.
We do not provide accommodation. This must be organised by the extern, along with transport to/from the clinic. Locations for accommodation: Fethard, Clonmel, Cashel, Killenaule
Must have public liability insurance cover from your university or the BVA
The student can apply for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Our Externs work alongside our experienced set of 8 interns. This is a good opportunity for you to get a good grasp of Equine practice. We often take on Externs as Interns in the future so please keep this in mind and express your interest in an Internship position while you are here.
